How an Installed Geothermal System Works

Geothermal Systems operate by transferring heat energy from one area to another. The constant temperature of the earth is used to its maximum benefit. In the summer, warm indoor heat is transferred to the cooler earth. In the winter, the warmer energy stored in the ground is extracted and used as a basis for heating your home or business. For example, instead of cooling your home down from 90 degrees in the summer or warming it up from 20 degrees in the winter, your geothermal heat pump is able to access the constant underground temperature (approximately 55 degrees in West Virginia) as a basis for heating/cooling to your desired room temperature. Most people prefer an indoor temperature of about 65 degrees to 75 degrees, enabling easy, extremely high-efficiency conversion from the ground temperature to your preferred indoor air temperature.

Your geothermal heat pump system is installed as a series of liquid-filled loops installed within the ground. The liquid within the loops exchanges heat energy when it is circulated.
